Who can upgrade?
Any referee who has the correct number of games and meets the minimum
age and has been a referee at the current grade for the minimum
time required can upgrade to the next level.

Administrative Handbook for these details.

Referee (Grade 7 and 8)
State Referee (Grade 5 and 6)
National Referee (Grade 4 and 3)

How to upgrade
NOTE:
Upgrade to National Referee is a different process. Contact when you wish to begin the process.

Complete a game log listing each game, team names,
gender and age of teams, date, and location, whether you
were the Referee or Assistant Referee and the assignor's
name who assigned you to this game. Sort this list so games
as a Referee are separate from games as an Assistant
Referee.
Complete the appropriate written test (Entry or State)
with the necessary minimum score within the last 12 months.

Complete the physical test with the minimum times
during the last 12 months for the grade you are upgrading
to. Refer to the Referee
Administrative Handbook for details.
Complete the necessary educational requirements.

Complete all necessary assessments required for
the grade you are upgrading to. Assessment fees are given
to the assessor at the time of the assessment.

Prepare all of this documentation and present at an Upgrade Clinic
or submit to the SRA at time of completion.
What next?
REMEMBER, all upgrades are provisional for 1 year. After this, if
all goes well, you will be officially at the new grade.
If you wish to register with the Federation at your new grade
before the next registration year, do the following:
For upgrade within a class (8 going to 7 or 6 going to 5) fill
out a new USSF registration form , completing the upgrade section.
Send this with $5.00 to the SRA
For upgrade to a new class (7 going to 6) fill out a new USSF
registration form, completing the upgrade section and send it
with the FULL fee for the new grade to the SRA.
If you wait to register the new grade until the next registration
year do the following:
Complete the registration form for the new year and fill in the
upgrade section. Send this with an attached note to the SRA that
you are registering at a new grade. Enclose the correct fee for
the new grade.
Do not cross out your old grade and write in your new in the area
where the form asks for your grade.
